Department of Physical Chemistry was founded at the same time as the Vinca Institute, in 1948., and got the first
separate building (as Physical Chemistry Laboratory) in 1950. Its first Head of Department was academician Pavle Savić, the founder of the Institute. This department was the parent of all other departments of the Institute dealing with chemistry, physical chemistry and materials science, which branched from it with the development of specialised research areas. Following its origins and accumulated knowledge, the Department is nowadays involved in developing and using specific analytical chemistry methods (mass spectrometry, optical and laser spectroscopy, chromotography, bioanalytics).

Since 2015 Department of Physical Chemistry has been certified by SGS, Zurich, Swittzerland for its quality system management according to the SRPS ISO 9001:2008 standard, certificate no. CH15/0419. The certificate was obtained for research and development in the field of physical chemistry and services in investigations and consulting in applied physical chemistry. The Department has established and maintains the management system in compliance with the requirements of the SRPS ISO/IEC 17025:2006 standard in the field of analytical chemistry examinations of building materials, waste, waste water, soil, air, packaging and metal materials, and biological (biochemical) examination.
